Sunset at the Edge of the World
Imagine something with me.
Imagine that it’s the first time you see the Western ocean. And it’s daytime. Imagine that you’re not a modern, and not educated about things like astronomy. At all. You might even be… a child. And you’re paying very close attention to what the light is doing, on the waters, and the Sun. In this imaginary situation, you know the Sun to be a being, not an object.
So you come to the waters and you see they are infinitely vast. The world divides itself before you into accessible land… and… infinite water. You get there before the sun has come close to the horizon. And you see…
Billions of sparklings on the waters. Hypnotic dances of glistening light.
And as the Sun begins to set… something impossible happens.
A bridge to the sky begins to form on the waters. As if the sparklings were condensing together to form a light-path.
And, over time, the bridge made of light becomes first subtle, then obvious… then… on fire.
And you can see that the sparkling has changed on the waters. Coalescing into the bridge. And as the bridge forms… the Sun… is getting closer to you. Larger. Huge in fact.
The bridge is bringing the Sun… closer…
Would you not wonder how to cross that bridge? To travel to where the Sun lives?
But that is not the end of the wonder. As the sun disappears… the sparkling that you saw on the waters… arises… in the night sky. As if the Sun exploded into many tiny lights… and the patterns they form in awareness.
I am insatiably curious about the nature of living beings, intelligence, language, and the origins of our species.
As a cognitive activist, my dream is that my work may contribute to our ability to understand the origins of our strange situation as modern humans, and assemble effective replacements for what our modern cultures are but the broken remnants and falsified costumes of.
